Dragons, Cherry Blossoms and One Piece Wedding Rings Inspired by Fate
When Calvin and Yacine approached Takayas to create their wedding bands, their story resonated with the same depth and beauty they wanted reflected in their rings. From their serendipitous beginnings—being born in the same hospital, a month apart—to reconnecting at a high school literary magazine and fulfilling their shared dreams of living in Japan, their relationship has been a journey of intertwined lives.
For their nuptials, Calvin and Yacine wanted rings that captured their love, shared history, and cultural connections. Takayas brought their vision to life, crafting their wedding bands featuring dragons and cherry blossoms as well as a One Piece inspired surprise inside.
Calvin and Yacine, both born in the Year of the Dragon, were drawn to this majestic symbol for their rings. Dragons represent power, strength, and good fortune, qualities they believe have been woven into their relationship. But their love story also had another prominent motif: cherry blossoms. As a couple who spent a transformative part of their lives together in Japan, the delicate sakura flowers—forever tied to their memories of their time in Tokyo—became a beautiful metaphor for their journey of rebirth and new beginnings.
Takayas set to work creating rings that were both symbolic and elegant. The result was a pair of custom platinum wedding bands, each featuring intricately carved dragons and cherry blossoms. They feature two dragons facing each other, locked in a gaze that captures the bond between them as they embark on their married life.
The cherry blossoms, artfully scattered around the dragons, are not merely ornamental but carry profound meaning. In Japan, these blooms symbolize the transient nature of life and the beauty of new beginnings. For Calvin and Yacine, these flowers represented the blossoming of their love and the new chapter they are about to begin as a married couple. The petals seem to float across the surface of their bands, as if carried by the gentle breeze of spring, signifying the hope and renewal that April’s cherry blossom season brings.
In their inquiry, Calvin and Yacine expressed a desire to add a personal touch to honor their favorite manga, One Piece. A ruby was requested for Calvin’s ring as a tribute to Luffy, and an emerald for Yacine’s, representing Zoro, two beloved characters who mirror their own personalities and adventures together.
As with all of Takayas’ designs, the magic didn’t stop at the surface. Inside the bands, a hidden surprise awaited. Takayas placed the ruby and emerald inside their ring connected by a delicate line of rose gold, symbolizing the red string of fate that Calvin and Yacine planned to use in their wedding ceremony’s handfasting ritual. This red string motif, mirroring their intertwined lives, added an extra layer of meaning to their rings.
Calvin & Yacine's engagement and wedding artwork by @aokkun
We were delighted to hear Calvin and Yacine married with glorious cherry blossoms framing their wedding this April. They were so kind to share these thoughts about their experience with Takayas:
"The final design is truly everything I ever wanted our wedding rings to be and encapsulates all of the elements that represent the life we've built together over the past two decades. Living authentically and embracing your truth has been a huge part of my journey as I transitioned and the culmination of our unwavering love for each other, fierce determination in the face of adversity, and unapologetic nerdiness could not have been more perfectly depicted in this design. Takayas did such an incredible job perfectly balancing the romance and masculinity we were looking for and we are so so so grateful to have had the privilege of being your clients."
Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to the couple for entrusting us with this most precious project. May they enjoy every happiness married life offers as they embark on the next chapter together!
