We work with a lot of diamonds because of all of our engagement ring commissions, so it's always a treat when we getto playwith colored stones like these emeralds and black diamonds in Janell and Mike's custom wedding ring set.

Mike had already proposed to Janell with a beautiful, vintage-style engagement ring, so she wanted to create an Art Deco inspired wedding ring to match her engagement ring's accent emeralds.

Baguette emeralds were a great stone requestfor her ring because Art Deco jewelry typically featured a lot of color and geometric lines.Unlike thefree-form, nature inspired designs of itsEdwardian and Art Nouveau jewelry predecessors, Art Deco jewelry had a lot of repeating, symmetrical patterns.

Takayas alternated emeralds and diamonds in her 14K white gold ring and added milgrain on the bezel settings to give it an antique look and match the beading on her engagement ring.

Janell also requested some dimension to her ring, so Takayas incorporated an open, cut-out design on the sides of her band to give it depth.

He wanted to do a modern take on the filigree look, so he used CAD to design a cut-out pattern on the band's sides inspired by the pattern on her engagement ring. Because the milgrain's metalbeads were too small to come out cleanly in casting, Takayas added the milgrain by hand as alast step aftersetting all of thestones.

For his custom men's wedding band, Mike requested a nautical anchor design to symbolize his time in the Navy.

Like Janell, Mike also wanted his ring to have some dimension rather than a standard, flat band.

Takayas initially created Mike's ring with an elongated, abstract anchor design, but Mike requested a more traditional style anchor.

It was important to Mikethat the anchors have a moreclassic look because of the biblical association betweenthe anchor and cross, so Takayas was happy to modify the proportions to more closely reflect a cross.

Becauseeach anchor's stock needed to connect the top and bottom of the band for structural security, Takayas incorporated a ball at the end of the anchors' horizontal bars to shortentheirproportions so thatthey would have more of the ratio of a cross.

After casting the band in 14K white gold and setting the black diamonds,Takayas plated the whole ring in black rhodium to create the black metal look.

To add a special, sentimental touch, instead of black diamonds, the underside of the band has fourcitrine, Janell's birthstone.

Their project was a lot of fun because of the two very different design directionstheir rings took.It was such a pleasure creating their rings, and we couldn't ask for a nicer couple to work with!
